Insane in Chloe’s Brain, Jeff Samuels latest monster on Trapez.

Trust Jeff Samuel. After a brief break from his adopted home of Traum, he returns with a killer of a track that completely encapsulates where the scene is right now. A neat combination of clean minimal layering and playful house grooves, this is the sound that is resonating around underground dance floors from Dubai to Dublin, Leeds to Berlin as the winter draws in.
Whilst some DJs are fully embracing the house revival and drowning in re-released classic covers, ‘Chloe’s Brain’ manages to keep the tempo fully engaged at the same time as dipping into the quirky side of tech-house. With an infectious wiggle rarely heard from this stable of labels, but gradually bleeding into many a previously minimal release, upbeat without being commercial,  funky in a good way - if that word can ever be revived in a good way - tracks like this are what keep electronic music exciting still.

B Side ‘The Times’ conversely is a classic piece of Samuel. Skipped beats, twisting and turning on the proverbial dime, the track dives and jacks to a powerful driving beat and would slot in nicely right next to Lost or Step, or any of Jeff’s other weird and wonderful releases.

If you’re buying this piece of merchandise in digital - and lets face it who isn’t anymore? - you’d be getting a couple of bonus tracks included. The first of which is named ‘Curveball’ though is actually anything but. A frankly predictable piece of acid techno which will still rock the system irrelevant to how groundbreaking it is, or isn’t.

There’s really nothing wrong with it, except one would generally expect more from a producer this good. The press release describes it as a “a powerful tool which has already rocked several dance floors during Jeff?s live sets”, and as a good strong filler track it no doubt does the job…possibly explains it’s bonus status.

The second gift on the digital release however is a genius jackin’ remix of ‘Chloe’s Brain’ courtesy of Seattle duo Jacob London. Their previous releases on Classic, Om, Doubledown may give you some  clue as to what this will sound like, and their treatment of the track, the added vocals and the fresh baseline makes for a totally different sound. Well worth having.
